Do Not Fear, Only Believe

STUDY GUIDE

This powerful message takes us into Mark chapter 5, where we encounter two desperate situations unfolding simultaneously: Jairus, a synagogue leader whose daughter is dying, and an unnamed woman who has suffered from bleeding for twelve years. What makes this passage so remarkable is how Jesus interrupts an urgent rescue mission to minister to someone society had cast aside. The woman represents the powerless—nameless, broke, contaminated, unwelcome—while Jairus embodies the powerful—respected, wealthy, influential. Yet both come to Jesus in desperation, and both receive his attention. This teaches us that Jesus is for the powerful and the powerless alike. He sees us all, regardless of our social standing or circumstances. The woman's healing goes beyond physical restoration; Jesus gives her something greater—identity and value. He calls her 'daughter,' restoring her place in community and relationship. Meanwhile, Jairus must wait through this interruption, trusting Jesus even when his daughter dies. The message culminates in Jesus raising the little girl with tender words, demonstrating his authority over death itself. Through these interwoven stories, we learn that true faith is self-risking trust in Jesus himself, not just in what he can do for our circumstances. When we truly believe he is in control, not even sickness and death get the final word.
