The Cruciform Life
STUDY GUIDE
This exploration of Mark chapter 8 confronts us with the most challenging invitation Jesus ever extended: to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him. We journey alongside the disciples in that pivotal moment when Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah, expecting glory and victory, only to hear Jesus describe a path of suffering, rejection, and death. The shock they experienced mirrors our own resistance when following Jesus costs us something we're not ready to surrender. We're challenged to understand what the cross truly meant in the first century—not yet a symbol of hope, but of execution and humiliation. The cruciform life Jesus invites us into isn't about self-hatred or worthlessness, but about discovering that life isn't ultimately all about us. In a world saturated with messages telling us we're the king of our own lives, Jesus steps forward and says there's already a King, and it isn't us. Yet this isn't a message of burden but of freedom—when we trust Jesus as King, we no longer have to carry the weight meant only for His shoulders. We don't have to be our own savior, manufacture our own worth, or control every outcome. The cruciform life moves us out of the center of our universe and invites us to ask not just what we want, but what Jesus wants and what love requires of us in each moment.
