Give To God What is God's
Study Guide
What does it mean to truly live with open hands? This message takes us on a journey through one of the most fascinating confrontations in the Gospel of Mark, where Jesus is cornered by two groups who despise each other yet unite against a common threat. The question they bring -- whether to pay the imperial tax to Caesar -- is a trap designed to destroy. But Jesus sidesteps the snare entirely and lands on something far more profound. His answer, 'give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's,' draws on the imagery of a coin bearing Caesar's image and points us back to Genesis, where we are told that human beings bear the image of God. If the coin belongs to Caesar because it bears his image, then we belong to God because we bear his. That single insight reframes everything. Our time, our talents, our money, our relationships -- none of it is truly ours. We are stewards, not owners. And when that truth settles into our hearts, the grip we have on life begins to loosen. We stop asking 'what is mine?' and start asking 'what has God entrusted to me, and how can I use it well?' This is the invitation before us -- to examine what we are holding tightly and consider what it might look like to open our hands.
