Why You Can Trust God

Study Guide

What does it really mean to trust God with everything we have? In Mark 14, we encounter one of the most striking acts of worship in all of Scripture -- a woman who breaks open an alabaster jar of extraordinarily expensive perfume and pours every last drop over Jesus. This was not a casual gesture. Scholars believe this kind of jar represented a family's financial safety net, a treasured heirloom that could be sold in times of crisis. And yet she broke it completely open, holding nothing back. The disciples were furious. But Jesus called it beautiful. This moment challenges us to examine how we approach God -- do we come with open hands or with hidden agendas? Do we trust him enough to give our best, or do we quietly hold something in reserve just in case? The story of this woman, identified in John 12 as Mary of Bethany, reminds us that extravagant trust flows naturally from a heart that has experienced God's extravagant love. She had watched her brother Lazarus rise from the dead. She had seen firsthand that nothing is beyond God's reach. That experience transformed her giving. When we truly grasp what God has already given us through Jesus, our own open-handedness becomes less of a sacrifice and more of a joyful response.
