Go and Grow: Colima, Mexico

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us Ephesians 5:1-2

  • To learn from orphans and their caregivers in Mexico as we serve together as families, a team, and the universal church.

  • To serve and encourage the kids, staff, and community of Hogar de Amor Orphanage

In 2019 we will offer two trip options: Saturday March 30 to April 6 and April 6 to April 13, 2019.

We work with one of the 12 Hogar de Amor orphanages in or near the city of Colima, Mexico. Colima is 2.5 hours south of Guadalajara and about an hour from the Pacific Ocean.

We determine which orphanage to go to based on where the greatest need is for a group with our skillset. We will stay in a hotel close to the orphanage.

    Who can go?

This trip is open to adults and accompanied children age 9 and older.

How much will it cost?

Can you really use me?

Yes! The beauty of a learning-based orphan care mission trip is that all ages and skillsets are valuable and useful. An open heart is your most important asset. Skills in teaching, leading craft projects, sports, and music are invaluable as we form relationships with the children of Hogar de Amor. Work projects are based on the skill set of the group and often include light construction projects, general maintenance, sewing and mending, electrical and plumbing work, and the omnipresent painting projects that naturally accompany homes with so many children.

Total cost is approximately $1200. This covers all essentials for the trip including airfare, food and lodging, and money and donations to cover the projects we will complete at the orphanage.

Our hope is that each person will only need to provide the $500-800 needed to cover their airfare and then we will individually and group fundraise for the rest. However, you may need to pay up to the full $1200 depending on the success of your fundraising efforts.

Scholarships may be available on an individual basis

What is the schedule?

  • Saturday: Travel day. Fly to Guadalajara, drive 2 hours to the Colima and get situated

  • Sunday: Attend the local Grupo Amor church, shop for supplies at the market, take the caregivers out to lunch, tour the orphanage and plan the week’s schedule

  • Monday through Thursday: Days are split between work projects and time with the kids playing games, leading crafts, etc. Lunch is served at the orphanage at about 2 pm and we will eat dinner in town or at the hotel at about 7

  • Friday: Tour the area

  • Saturday: Return home

    Is it safe?

In the six years of traveling to Colima we have not experienced a significant health or safety hazard. Howerver, all travel includes the possibility of injury, illness, or crime, and each person considering this trip should evaluate their own tolerance for uncertainty and risk.

About the orphanages

More questions?

The Hogar de Amor group of orphanages is a ministry of the Grupo Amor Church in Colima, Mexico and the surrounding area. Grupo Amor actively seeks to protect and care for vulnerable children in their area and welcomes the partnership of other churches to come alongside their congregation to serve the children of Hogar de Amor.

The Hogar de Amor orphanages are Christian orphanages that provide a home for approximately 200 children ranging in age from infants to teens. They continue to provide a home and support for those young adults that want to pursue post-secondary school education. You can learn more about Hogar de Amor at http://www.hogardeamor.org/en/home
