BAPTISM

Publicly declaring new life in Jesus.

What is Baptism?

We're thrilled that you're investigating baptism as the next step in your spiritual journey. Baptism is a wonderful step of obedience in following Christ. It is an opportunity to follow Jesus’ example and teaching by publicly proclaiming your trust in him. By being baptized, you announce that Jesus has washed away your sins and given you new life. By getting in the water we are not declaring that we’ve achieved sinless perfection or some type of “super-Christian” status. In fact, we’re saying almost the opposite. Baptism is not about what we’ve achieved, but about what Christ has achieved in us. Baptism also pictures the fact that we were dead in our sins until we trusted Christ who paid our sin’s debt and conquered sin’s power through his resurrected life.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9

FAQ

When should I be baptized?
Baptism is a first step in our faith in Jesus, not a privilege we work toward or earn, so we encourage individuals to get baptized at the next available opportunity. At CenterPoint, we intentionally schedule baptisms multiple times a year so our church family can celebrate with you. This also gives those being baptized the chance to invite their family and friends to share in this special moment.
Why is baptism important?
It represents Jesus Christ’s burial and resurrection. “Having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” Colossians 2:12 It is a picture of your new life as a Christian. Going under the water, we illustrate our burial, dead to our old life of sin. Coming out of the water, we portray resurrection, our new life in Jesus. (See Romans 6:2-4)
Who should be baptized?
Every person who believes in Christ as their Lord and Savior. Baptism is a step of obedience. “Those who accepted his message were baptized.” Acts 2:41 Baptism doesn’t save you, only your faith in Christ does. Baptism is a symbol of your commitment to Jesus. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
How old should a person be to get baptized?
We are not given a specific age in Scripture. The model we observe in Scripture is an authentic confession of sin and trust in Christ.
Does it matter who baptizes me?
The Bible gives no prescription for the requirements to perform baptism. We allow any believer, male or female, who is baptized themselves to perform the baptism.
Should a person ever get re-baptized?
If you were baptized by faith into Jesus Christ, there is no reason to get re- baptized. Circumstances for re-baptism
may be an infant baptism, or a baptism coerced by fear or manipulation, or those who were previously baptized into church membership or a religious system, but not necessarily into saving faith in Jesus Christ.
What should I wear?
CenterPoint will provide a solid-colored t-shirt to wear for your baptism. We encourage this because it helps our church family identify those getting baptized, and the solid color doesn’t become revealing after submersion (some light colors become partially transparent after being in water). In addition to the baptism t-shirt, please wear a swimsuit or shirt underneath and shorts or pants. Please also bring a towel for yourself.

Baptism is one of the most meaningful ways to declare that Jesus has changed your life. Whether you’re ready to take this step or simply exploring what baptism means, we’d love to connect with you. Our pastoral staff is here to answer your questions, encourage you, and walk with you every step of the way.
